How many beds does the shelter have?
We are licensed by the State of Connecticut up to 67 beds, but can house up to 101 clients during winter months and in emergencies.
Is there a fee to stay at the shelter?
There is a minimal fee to stay at the shelter. However, if a client is unable to afford the minimal fee then he will be assigned a chore in place of the fee.
How can I contact someone staying at the shelter?
Based on privacy and respect to our clients, Shelter for the Homeless will not say whether a client is staying at the shelter. However, if you need to get in touch with an individual, you believe is staying with us, you may call 203-357-9886 and leave a message on our general answering service. The message will be posted and should the client be at Shelter for the Homeless then he will receive the message. It will then be upon the client whether or not to return the call.

From I-95 heading North (toward New Haven)
Exit Number 8 (Atlantic Street) Go through first set of lights. Get over to the right lane as soon as possible. At the next light, turn right onto Canal Street. Go through the traffic light, remaining on Canal Street. Turn right onto Market Street and at the end of the road turn left onto Pacific Street. Go about one block and the shelter will be on your right. 597 Pacific Street is a 2-story red brick building.
From I-95 heading South (toward New York)
Exit Number 7 (Atlantic Street) At the end of the light at the end of the ramp, turn left onto Canal Street. Go under I-95 and railroad tracks. Turn right onto Market Street and at the end of the street turn left onto Pacific Street. Go about one block and the shelter will be on your right. 597 Pacific Street is a 2-story red brick building.
When is the shelter open?
We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Yes all donations are tax deductible.
Does the shelter have Spanish-speaking staff?
Yes, Shelter for the Homeless has 2 bilingual case managers to accommodate those clients that speak Spanish.
